Game Scene Final Project Post
Presentation
Final Week Post
I finished all components of the project. I was able to finish the models, the UV process, texturing, and creating a terrain for my scene. The unity project ran well, and all the models had colliders attached to them so the player couldn't walk through them. All the scales for the buildings and props were proportionate to the player as intended.
Exporting the model's fbx files was not an issue and since I centered their pivot, dragged it to the bottom vertex of the object, and put it at the center of the grid, the movement was easy in Unity. The textures came out as intended in the Unity scene, so there were no errors in that area. I was able to add the base map, normal map, and metallic smoothness map with no issues.
I made the terrain emulate a forest military outpost. I had the water well as the centerpiece for the scene, flags in front of the barracks, and swords leaning on the water well. I made two of each modular building so that the scene was more populated. With the terrain brush, I made a dirt path that leads the player to the water well and then branches off to the other buildings. I made sure to add mountains in the background so that the scene felt more organic. I added some trees as well to add to the atmosphere.
What I learned from this project was that I can finish a large project on time if I pace myself and set time goals. I still need to work on my time management and modeling efficiency, but with the lessons I learned from trial and error I feel confident in moving forward with future projects.
Week 3 Progress Post
I finished the tower and started the barracks modular building. I also made progress on the water well centerpiece. The water well was going to be made of brick and have posts that were made of wood. I also want to add a rope and a bucket to it so that it has more detail. I was able to finish the UV process for the tower and add textures in Painter.
I made the Unity scene in advance so that I could test out the models and textures. Everything worked fine and I was able to go back to finishing the models in Maya.
During this week I made sure to label all the pieces I made so that I knew where everything was. This saved a lot of time for me and made it easier to locate certain objects. Before, I didn't go in depth with grouping and naming in the hierarchy and this made the modeling progress more difficult than it should have been.
A problem I came across was that the UV's weren't rotated correctly, so when I added textures, they looked slanted. This was very apparent because I made the tower mostly out of brick texture. The slanted bricks did not look good, so I had to fix the UV's so that they were straight. This also included resizing them so that the more important shapes were larger, and the smaller pieces didn't take up as much space.
I did better this week with time management than last week. I learned from the mistakes I made last week and implemented the techniques I learned to model better geometry. I could have spent more time this week finishing the props, but I feel comfortable with the time I have left and the progress I made.
My plan is to finish the finish all the models by Friday before the deadline so that I have the weekend to focus on UVing and adding textures. Sunday I will do some final touch ups in Unity and turn in the project.
Week 2 Progress Post
This week I started on the scout tower modular building. I had made some decent progress on the individual pieces until I had to start putting them together. I realized that the base corner pieces were intersecting and didn't meet up nicely at the corners. I also didn't scale all the pieces to each other, so some pieces were too big to fit the model. This was due to poor planning and not studying the modular techniques enough over the break.
The simplest solution was to start over from scratch, and that's what I did. This time, I decided to make a full model of the scout tower with one object. I made sure this building was centered to the world because this made it easier to snap pieces together and to the grid. This method was much more efficient, and I ended up getting a better end result.
My time was not spent as efficiently as I would have liked. I was spending most of my time rewatching tutorials and troubleshooting issues I had with my geometry. While this was a great way to freshen up my skills and implement them, if I had used more time during the break to study these things, I would have progressed better this week. I spent a lot of time seeing what I did wrong with geometry as compared to the time I spent modeling. This resulted in more hours spent on the project than what was represented in the scene.
My plan for the upcoming week is to have the tower completed and either majority of the second building finished or two props finished.
Week 1 Progress Post
The game project is about choosing one of the selected games that were provided and making a micro game scene. The game I chose was Warcraft 3 Reforged. We had to make two buildings out of modular pieces and three props. Next, UV all the models and apply textures in Substance Painter. Then, import these assets into Unity and make a scene.
I decided to make a barracks building and scout tower for my modular buildings. For the props I chose to make swords, flags, and a water well for the center piece. I wanted to make a scene that resembled an army's outpost or camp.
For my task list, I decided that over the break I would make a concept list for the modular pieces and review tutorials to freshen up my skills on modeling tools to make the modular pieces and props. I will also be implementing a human reference in my scene so that I can get all the scales for the buildings as accurate as possible.
My plan for these upcoming weeks is to know what modular pieces I need to model before I come back from break. I also plan to have one modular building and one prop done before the end of next week. I plan on starting the scout tower first since it is the easiest of the two modular buildings. I want to make the water well center piece first so that I can scale it next to the scout tower for reference.
